APA Parenting Meme (Con't)

This is from guest Rice Daddy: Mister Zen

1. I am:
Chinese and Native Hawaiian

2. My kids are:
Chinese, Filipino, and Hawaiian

3. I first realized I was APA when:
I figured out how wealthy my first haole friend was.

4. People think my name is:
Jeff Yang; Connie Chung.

5. The family tradition I most want to pass on is:
New Year's in Hawai'i, all-night pool and poké parties, and multifamily road trips!

6. The family tradition I least want to pass on is:
actually, it's all good. All the problems give us something to talk about.

7. My child's first word in English was:
Zito. Just kidding. It was 'Vida Blue'.

8. My child's first non-English word was:
Wikiwiki. (Shut up!--LOL, that's mixing Hawaiian and hip-hop for you.)

9. The non-English word/phrase most used in my home is:
Pau. ("Are you pau with your dinner?" "Yes, I'm pau." "No you're not. Eat your rice!")

10. One thing I love about being an APA parent is:
My kids are always the cutest ones on the playground!

11. One thing I hate about being an APA parent is:
People tend to assume you're another drone from some big Asian borg.

12. The best thing about being part of an APA family is:
We roll deep, and our parties never leave anyone hungry. Plus with leftovers, you don't have to buy food for a week or two.

13. The worst thing about being part of an APA family is:
we don't always treat difference that well.

14. To me, being Asian Pacific American means:
Fighting for the dim sum bill with the tenacity of a tiger, the strength of an oxen, and the wiles of a monkey.

re: Dim Sum. I'm always looking for good siu mai, Zen. What's your favorite? Where do you live and which are the best dim sum spots out your way? I see you spent time in NorCal and LA--any memorable dim sum there?

I grew up in the subrurbs of LA, and watched the good dimsum get closer and closer to me.

Used to be (OK, decades ago) we went to chinatown. Then monterey park / alhambra. Now my hometown of cerritos has lots of good places.

my favorite story of asian check- paying prowess, from a Texan I knew in college:

The family that lost the battle at the restaurant drove by the other family's house later that night, and left the money on their porch!

R2dad...if you're in SF and looking for some good dim sum, check out Yank Sing, Golden Dragon or Gold Mountain.

thanks for the tip, MD. Have been to Yank Sing, which was really good. However, it's 3x more expensive than our favorite (Koi Palace in Daly City, has the best fung zhao). Also, it's location makes it a good lunch spot for the downtown financial types with expense accounts. Great lobster gow! Zen Peninsula (on el camino across from SFO) is good as well, with white tablecloths and a quiet atmosphere--good date location. Awesome custard tart. Didn't like Hong Kong Flower Lounge as much. Lots of other good takeout dim sum on Irving, Noriega, Clement and Geary. Looking forward to trying out those 2 chinatown suggestions.
Heard that Ocean Star in Monterey Park is best in LA.

I too have noticed that my carmel kids (1/2 filipino and 1/2 blindingly white american) are also the cutest at the playground.

I will try very hard not to go your playground when your kids are around!! LOL

Ahahahaha...Asian borg, that's awesome. Sh*t, I'm 5 of 7, from the Pinoy cube.

Yo Jeff [insert consonants]ang, too bad you didn't go to the AAJA convention...I got Chang'ed multiple times while there, even got a groupie coming up and asking me about CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP. Thought about offering to sign her book, but then thought better of it. :)

Meanwhile, if we're cruising toward a Cute Kid rumble, I'll throw down with my son Hudson any day. He's a monorail (none of that hybrid vigor x-factor thang to roll with) and his dad's ugly, but somehow he managed to escape that crippling hereditary curse and develop into a real playground studmuffin. My wife must have strong genes...
