You Dim Sum, You Lose Some!

I don't know what's happening with my little 17-month-old daughter, the Peanut. A month ago, she was the easiest kid in the world to feed. Whenever it was mealtime, we'd just stick Peanut in the high chair and she'd just eat whatever we were eating. She wasn't picky about her food and we were amazed at the sheer diversity of food that she enjoyed without a single complaint!

Now? She won't eat anything! She's weaned herself off milk, hates baby food, and abhors almost everything we put in front of her?

The one exception? Dim sum. The kid eats ANY kind of dumpling you put in front of her---shumai, gyoza, mandoo! You name it, she eats it!

It's funny. On the one hand, I'm glad she enjoys eating Asian food. On the other hand? If things keep up, I'm going to have to open my own Chinese restaurant. Maybe I'll name it "Golden Peanut." Catchy, isn't it?

But I really am starting to feel like a short-order cook at a Chinese restaurant (which probably isn't even that good of a description of how I'm feeling because all the short-order cooks at Chinese restaurants these days seem to be Mexican. But you get the point, right?)

Anyone else have a picky eater on their hands? How do you deal with it?

Once I happened on a quote from some celebrity mom like Jada Pinkett or Madonna that said, "If if wasnt for cheerios and bananas, my baby would starve." So, I realized that even celebrities cant get their babies to eat, I shouldnt be too stressed about it.

My picky eater turned six this year, and as he has gotten older, his tastes have slowly expanded. Just this weekend at dim sum, he tried (and liked!) some of daddy's 'phoenix claws' -this is especially amazing because not even his mom likes them chicken feet, but now he and I have something to share.

Of course, next time I put some in front of him, he might gag, that's just how it goes.

Dude, you're freakin' me out. The Pumpkin's only a few weeks behind Peanut age-wise, and now you got me all scared. She ditched baby food around 9 months totally, been just on table food since then and eats everything practically (and she's a little piggy) unless it's bland! Been on cow's milk since her birthday. I've been haven't nightmares about pickiness lately--when's my little gourmand gonna only want things that are white, or whatever? I feel for you, dude, here's hoping I don't become you! :) (Sorry, that's not helpful at all, I know...)

My daughter, who will be 16 months this Friday, doesn't take to any food that well. She's never liked baby food. The weird thing is that she would rather eat sushi and sashimi than say any random veggie and chicken. Suffice it to say she can't eat sushi and sashimi at every single sitting, so I struggle with her to eat table food. I still breastfeed her because she likes milk above everything else, and since she isn't inclined to eat food, I can't starve her. But I'd really, really like to wean her soon. I am going to start in another month or so. It's going to be a bitch.

my seven month old daughter pretty much only eats fruit and cereal -anything else she'll only tolerate if there is banana and pears in the mix.

I was thinking you could hide a variety of "normal" food inside dim sum wrappers - roast beef, lasagne, rice pudding...

E has a habit of chewing something up, then taking it out of her mouth and throwing it on the floor. It is especially annoying when it is spaghetti with marinara sauce. We can't get through one day without her getting a stain on her shirt, pants and the carpet because she does this with everything. She is very picky about textures, esp meat.

I get reallly frustrated so when she starts acting up during mealtimes, I take her out of her chair and tell her we're "all done". We don't let her back to the table or give her any food until she quiets down.

That's exactly how Maya was. Some times it's just that they are testing their independence. And other times, it's that they have just developed their taste buds. Keep putting other foods in front of her though, because some times they will like it the next time. We still have to convince Maya she likes Zucchini every single freaking time. Luckily for me, Nata is still a good eater.

Oh, deja vu...

The Munchkin did this the week after she turned one year old. She lived on peanut butter crackers, grilled cheese sandwiches, and whole milk for THREE MONTHS. (At least the Peanut has good taste - I love dim sum!) At that point, she decided that what we had our our plates couldn't be all that bad, so she went back to eating table foods. I think a huge part of her eating habits sea-change was her innate desire to feed herself, which she could do with sandwiches and crackers. She's 26 months and generally does eat a balanced diet now, though it's like pulling teeth to get her to eat undisguised vegetables - we have to hide them in things like soup. Fortunately, her brother (7 months) is too little to pull this on me, but that day is coming, I know it.

I hope Peanut isn't picky for long. I can only hope that she doesn't SHRIEK between courses like Peaches. It has gotten to the point that I will put all of her food on the food tray at once, just to keep her from emitting the noise that could make ears bleed. Tonight it was Goldfish, beets, cheesestick, a piece of whole wheat pita, and some lime jello. Imagine how that looked.
